Western Montana Mental Health Center Under Investigation for Data Breach of Over 86,000 Patient Records
Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe LLP is investigating a data breach that led to unauthorized access of the sensitive information of 86,758 individuals held by Western Montana Mental Health Center (WMMHC), a Montana-based provider of behavioral health services and substance abuse treatment programs.
On September 15, 2024, WMMHC experienced a network disruption and determined an unauthorized actor accessed files. WMMHC learned on or around May 27, 2025, that some of these files included personal and protected health information.
Although the breach occurred in September 2024, WMMHC did not begin notifying affected individuals until on or around July 17, 2025, which may have violated state and federal laws. The following information may have been compromised in the breach: names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, state or federal identification numbers, medical information, financial account information, and/or health insurance information.
If your personal information was impacted by this incident, you may be at risk of identity theft and other serious violations of your privacy. As a result, you may be entitled to money damages and an injunction requiring changes to WMMHC’s cybersecurity practices.
